TEA REVIEWS: 2015 spring teas at Teabox

For the longest time I was a dedicated first flush Darjeeling man. Over the past year I’ve moved to the second flush side. While there are MANY bad second flushes out there (especially in cafes), a solid second flush is hard to beat. That said, I still love when the first flushes hit the market in the spring – it is like tea heaven! They are fresh, aromatic and get you in the mood for spring and warmer weather.

Today I’m reviewing three black Darjeelings and one oolong Darjeeling. These teas were picked between February and April.

2015 Castleton Classic Spring Darjeeling Chinary Black

Picked on 2 April, Castleton Classic cups out a golden liquor that has lemony, honey and sweet (tree fruit) flavours. It is a medium-bodied tea that is crisp and slightly dry, although refreshing.

Jungpana Classic Spring Darjeeling Black

Picked on 3 February, Jungpana Classic cups out a pale yellow liquor with a crisp, lemony aroma. The first infusion is crisp, lemony and dry, whilst the second infusion is less dry, and has some floral flavours.

2015 Goomtee Special Spring Darjeeling Black

Picked on 3 April, Goomtee Special cups out the darkest liquor of the three black Darjeelings reviewed here. The liquor is a dark golden colour and is aromatic and flavourful. It is a medium-bodied tea that is slightly dry, has floral headnotes and a muscatel finish and aftertaste.

Singbulli Exotic Spring Darjeeling Flowery Oolong

Picked on 17 March, the dry leaf of the Singbulli Exotic has a flowery aroma. The tea cups out an almost translucent liquor – similar to many white teas. Singbulli Exotic has strong floral and orange blossom flavours. In my opinion, many Darjeeling and Nepalese oolongs have orange blossom notes that can often be too strong. Singbulli Exotic has well-balanced flavours, thus giving it more complexity, and making it a refreshing afternoon tea.

  • Infuse three times with 80C water

Final thoughts

When teas are this fresh, it is almost impossible not to enjoy them. They smell great and taste fresh.

I really enjoyed comparing the three black Darjeeling teas. I found the Castleton Classic and the Jungpana Classic to be very similar teas in flavour.  The Castleton Classic, however, has more body. The Goomtee Special was my favourite of the black Darjeelings. It has great first flush characteristics, such as floral and crisp notes, but it also has a muscatel finish and aftertaste that really rounds out the tea.

The Singbulli Exotic was also a pleasure to try and compare to Darjeeling and Nepalese oolongs I’ve tried in the past. While it is not anything like the Chinese and Taiwanese oolongs that I love so much, I enjoyed its complex flavours and smoothness.
