REVIEW: Tip Top Tea – Yunnan Black (2013)

Dry leaf:

– The dry leaf is large, twisted leaves with golden tips scattered throughout

– It has a sweet, caramel-like aroma

Infused tea:

– The tea cups out a copper-coloured liquor that has a strong caramel aroma

– The liquor is medium-bodied, with a caramel-like flavour. It is extremely smooth, with only a small hint of astringency

Tips/conclusions:

– Infuse this tea for three and half minutes with 95C water to drink without milk. Increase infusion time by a minute to drink with milk. For the second infusion, increase the steeping time one to two minutes

– Personally, I think this tea is best drunk without milk. Its complex caramel flavour is not enhanced by milk. This tea has classic Yunnan flavours, but its smoothness and refined flavour distinguish it as a top-quality Yunnan

My top tip: While this is a good tea for an afternoon pick-me-up with a sweet treat, it is packed with enough flavour to make it a great breakfast tea, especially if you crave something slightly lighter than a hearty Assam

It was not until my early 20s, when I was seeking a lighter alternative to coffee, that I took tea drinking to a new level. I still remember my mother suggesting that I try putting milk in a cup of black tea (something that actually sounded a bit repulsive at the time, but I gave it a go).
