REVIEW: Fortnum & Mason – Breakfast Blend

Fortnum & Mason - Breakfast Blend

– Tea: Pure Assam tea from the Brahmaputra Valley.
– Purchased at: Fortnum & Mason (December 2012).
– Retail price: £8.50 (250 gram tin).

My comments:
This tea is a moderately broken blend with a few golden tips sprinkled throughout. Since it lacks the addition of a lighter tea to brighten it up (such as Ceylon), it is a rather strong cup that could appeal to coffee drinkers. The Assam in this tea produces a malty cup that is transformed into a smooth breakfast treat with a splash of milk.

I have bought this tea many times over the past ten years, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reasonably-priced luxury tea for everyday drinking.

My rating: 4/5

Steeped four minutes

About teaxplorer

I grew up in the Midwest of the US and was introduced to tea at a very young age - unsweetened iced tea, that is! It was not until my early 20s, when I was seeking a lighter alternative to coffee, that I took tea drinking to a new level. I still remember my mother suggesting that I try putting milk in a cup of black tea (something that actually sounded a bit repulsive at the time, but I gave it a go). I quickly became tired of supermarket tea and started ordering teas from shops and companies all over the US. Throughout my 20s and now into my early 30s, pursuits in higher education studies, work opportunities and marriage have given me opportunities to live in the UK, Canada and Germany and travel around the world, which has sparked an even greater interest in tea and the culture of tea. This blog is my outlet to discuss my love of tea and show off some of my photos. All images and opinions on this blog are my own, unless stated otherwise. I retain copyright on all photographs, but please do not hesitate to contact me at if you wish to reproduce any of my images. Likewise, if you would like me to review and photograph any teas for you, please get in touch. I would be happy to hear from you. Thank you for stopping by my blog, and I hope you return many times! Happy drinking! Drew B (@teaxplorer)

this is my all-time favourite tea – I tried it for the first time last year and fell in love. I’m currently enjoying a pot of Harrods English Breakfast tea, but it’s doesn’t pack the punch that the F&M Breakfast blend delivers.

It has been about ten years since I tried Harrods English Breakfast. I vividly remember not liking it at all, which is why I did not include it in my review of English breakfast teas. It used to, and this might be the same today, have tons of Darjeeling in the blend. I personally think that Darjeeling is a tea that should not be in an English breakfast tea because it is not a tea to add milk to. Very few English breakfast blends have mastered putting a little Darjeeling in the blend, but Harrods is not one.

  2. This is one of my favorite teas! Love the strong, malty, rich Assam! I stock up on Fortnum’s tea about once a year.
